Research Support of the Minority Mental Health Research Program (MMHRP)
Schizophrenia Liability Gene Among African Americans Principal Investigator: L. DiAnne Bradford, Ph.D. Agency: National Institute of Mental Health Type: RO1, Period: 07/01/02-06/30/07 The major aims of this grant are to identify genes that underlie liability for schizophrenia. To this end, this eight-site multicenter study will recruit 1260 African-American families with at least one affected family member. These will contribute to standard Affective Sibling and Relative Pair linkage analysis and to Quantitative Trait Locus analysis of neurocognitive traits. Polymorphism of CYP2D6 Liver Enzymes in African-Americans: Determinants of Drug Bioavailability Principal Investigator: L. DiAnne Bradford, Ph.D. Agency: National Institute of General Medical Sciences Type: RO1 GM58647, Period: 09/30/99-09/29/00 The major aim of this multidisciplinary grant is to conduct population studies in determining Polymorphism of CYP2D6 in African Americans. The study includes genotyping and phenotyping and estimating the role of age, concurrent drugs and medical illnesses and environmental variables on CYP2D6 activity. Currently, data on more than 300 participants is being analyzed. The Morehouse School of Medicine Minority Research Infrastructure Support Program Principal Investigator: L. DiAnne Bradford, Ph.D. Agency: National Institute of Mental Health Type: P24 MH58272, Period: 07/20/99-06/30/02 The major aims of this grant are to: establish the capabilities for conducting mental health research (with emphasis on depression) at Morehouse School of Medicine; and to facilitate minorities in choosing research careers in mental health (from undergraduate to faculty levels). This grant will also provide "seed" grants to enable preliminary data gathering for subsequent independent grant applications for new investigators, as well as mentoring throughout their training period. The grant also includes two prospectively designed studies in screening, diagnosing and treatment of depression in African Americans. The Morehouse School of Medicine RCMI Clinical Research Infrastructure Initiative Section Head, Clinical Pharmacology: L.
