Program Objectives of the Psychiatry Residency Program
Rotations within private and public hospitals and clinics will enhance the training experience and provide the resident with training in specialized and general medical facilities. The primary goal of providing residents with a thorough and intensive training program is met by specific objectives: PGY 1 This is a transitional year designed to provide an experience in internal medicine, neurology and a supervised experience in eclectic psychiatry, including chronic mental illness, organic brain dysfunction, chronic substance abuse, and geriatric consultation. Residents complete two months of inpatient medicine at Grady Memorial Hospital, two months of outpatient clinical experience in the Department of Family Medicine, and two months of Neurology. Residents complete a six- month rotation in psychiatry at the Central Alabama Veterans' Healthcare System in Tuskegee, Ala., which includes inpatient, outpatient and geriatric psychiatry training. PGY 2 This developmental path year provides training and experience in adult outpatient psychiatry as well as child and adolescent psychiatry. Individual supervision in psychotherapy or family therapy and group therapy is initiated in the second half of this year to continue through the end of post- graduate year four. Experiences in child and adolescent psychiatry, clinical research, addiction psychiatry, psychosocial rehabilitation and community outreach services are included. Residents begin long-term psychotherapy cases with individual supervision, and learn crisis intervention. Residents have a one-week experience at Hazelden Recovery Center in Center City, Minn. PGY 3 This year is an inpatient experience. The resident completes rotations on several inpatient units which focus on different clinical populations. A rotation in emergency psychiatry is completed in this year. Residents complete rotations on several inpatient units at Georgia Regional Hospital which focus on different clinical populations. A two-month rotation in emergency psychiatry is completed at Grady Memorial Hospital. PGY 4 Training in this year includes advanced outpatient, hospital and administrative experiences supplemented by required clinical electives. Training in this year consists of consultation liaison psychiatry at Grady Memorial Hospital, forensic psychiatry at Georgia Regional Hospital, child and adolescent psychiatry at Inner Harbour and elective clinical experiences. |
