Medical Student Clerkship
The Surgery Clerkship course is designed to prepare the student for the practice of medicine by offering a comprehensive undergraduate experience in the scientific basis of surgical practice. It includes experiences in General, Oncology, and Trauma Surgeries, as well as Critical Care. Dr. William Lynn Weaver is chairman of the department. The Third-Year Clerkship Director is Dr. James A. McCoy and the Associate Clerkship Director is Dr. Frank Jones. There is a required eight-week rotation during the third year. The rotation is under the guidance of the Morehouse School of Medicine Department of Surgery Clinical Facility at Grady Memorial Hospital. Emphasis is on the use of basic science principals while developing clinical diagnosis and management skills. The major objectives of the clerkship are to provide an entry-level knowledge of the basic surgical principles and techniques. Within this academic objective, the course has educational objectives in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains. The second objective is to give the student experience in all areas of surgical care. Senior electives are available in 1) General Surgery/ Oncology and 2) Trauma/Critical Care.
