Residency Program Information
Post-Graduate Year (PGY) The PGY-1 categorical surgical resident rotates through general surgery, trauma surgery, SICU, the emergency room, ENT, urology, and anesthesiology. The PGY-1 preliminary (non-designated or designated) surgical resident rotates through at least four of the above rotations. The PGY-2 surgical resident rotates through general surgery, trauma surgery, neurosurgery, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, hepatic and renal transplantation, surgical endoscopy, and the surgical intensive care unit. The PGY-3 categorical surgical resident rotates through general surgery, trauma surgery and surgical oncology at Grady Memorial Hospital as well as pediatric surgery at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite for a two-month period. The PGY-3 surgical resident is a first responder. The PGY-4 categorical surgical resident rotates through general surgery, trauma surgery, vascular surgery, and serves as the senior resident at Columbus Medical Center and South Fulton Medical Center, each for a four-month period. The PGY-4 surgical resident also is a first responder. The PGY-5 categorical surgical resident rotates through general surgery and trauma surgery and serves as the senior resident on these services. Each PGY-5 serves as the Administrative Chief for six months, with the responsibilities of maintaining call, vacation, operative, and conference schedules. The PGY-5 surgical resident also is a first responder and chief of the Trauma team or General Surgery team at Grady Memorial Hospital. |
