Dr. Brenda Hayes, director of grant and proposal development was a presenter in the Intensive Grant Writing Workshop at the 2nd Annual Health Disparities Conference. This conference was held at the Teachers College on the campus of Columbia University. July 9, 2007 The Department of Surgery at Morehouse School of Medicine has earned continued accreditation. The Surgery Residency Review committee (RRC) of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is responsible for reviewing and accrediting residency (graduate) training programs in surgery. Based on the February 2007 MSM surgery site visit and review of documents and program information, the department has been notified that the committee has voted to continue accreditation. The next department of surgery site visit is scheduled for 2010. June 7, 2007 The Holcim, Inc. cement plant sponsored MSM students to work at several clinics in the Charleston area that serve low-income patients. June 5, 2007 In the past 15 years, U.S. medicine has seen a huge influx of first- and second-generation immigrants. It follows and augments a different demographic trend that began 30 years ago with the acceptance of increasing numbers of women into medical schools. As a result of that earlier revolutionary change, half of new practitioners today are women. The Norman Rockwell-Marcus Welby image of the American doctor - an avuncular white man, often in a bow tie - is rapidly disappearing. Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta has 12 students born in Africa out of about 210 in the M.D. program. May 31, 2007 The MPH Program is accredited through Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). CEPH is an independent agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to accredit schools of public health and certain public health programs offered in settings other than schools of public health. These schools and programs prepare students for entry into careers in public health. The primary professional degree is the Master of Public Health, but other masters and doctoral degrees are offered as well. May 29, 2007 A digital collection that chronicles the founding of America's black colleges and universities will continue to expand, thanks to a $450,000 grant Cornell University Library received from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Cornell Library is sharing its expertise in digital imaging, preservation, and management with librarians and archivists from the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Library Alliance in an initiative that is laying the foundation for an HBCU digital library. Important materials from the founding collections of 10 HBCU institutions will soon be available online in a digital collection entitled "Celebrating the Founding of the Historically Black College and University." They included: Lincoln University - Missouri, Miles College, Morehouse School of Medicine, North Carolina Central University, Paine College, Southern University at Shreveport, South Carolina State University, St. Augustine's College, Texas Southern University and the University of the District of Columbia. The grant also will allow the first 10 participating HBCU institutions to continue their digitization efforts and provide funding to train selected HBCU librarians in digital video and audio techniques. May 23, 2007 Portraits of MSM President Emeritus Dr. Louis W. Sullivan and former MSM President Dr. David Satcher were unveiled at the 2007 Morehouse College Baccalaureate Saturday May 19, 2007. An overflow crowd attended the afternoon event in the Martin Luther King International Chapel. Sullivan is a 1954 graduate of Morehouse College. Satcher graduated in 1963 from Morehouse College: Dr. Otis W. Smith ('47) also was honored with a portrait at Saturday's ceremony. The new alumni portraits will grace the walls of Nabrit-Mapp-McBay Hall on the Morehouse College campus. May 18, 2007 Doug Paulsen, Ph.D., associate dean for Graduate Studies and professor of Anatomy & Neurobiology was appointed by the National Board of Medical Examiners as chair of the committee to review items for the Histology and Cell Biology Subject (Miniboard) exam. His role will be "deciding disposition and replacement of Histology and Cell Biology items, reviewing items that were flagged at key validation points, reviewing/revising pool items as required, and resolving any disagreements among other reviewers and other issues that may relate to the project." May 10, 2007 MSM's Department Microbiology, Biochemistry and Immunology welcomed the first postdoctoral fellows Kwaku Asare, M.D. and Adel Driss, Ph.D., to join its training program in Genomics and Hemoglobinopathies, which began in 2007. Asare is a resident doctor in the Department of Hematology at the University of Ghana Medical School and has taught graduate hematology at the School of Allied Health. He is involved in research projects related to sickle cell disease at the Center for Clinical Genetics in Ghana. Driss, a molecular biologist originally from Tunisia, completed two years of postdoctoral training in Molecular and Cellular Genetics at the Winship Cancer Institute, Emory University. He has applied various molecular genetics tools in muscular dystrophy research. Over the next two years, both fellows will be involved in collaborative basic science research related to the molecular immunopathogenesis of sickle cell disease. Funding for both fellows comes from an NIH/Fogarty International Center postdoctoral training grant in Genomics and Hemoglobinopathies, with the goal of establishing careers in Hemoglobinopathies research using genomic methodology. Dr. Jonathan Stiles, MBI Department, is the PI for this grant. In recognition of National Nurse Week, Patricia Jackson, R.N., clinical trials manager in the Clinical Research Center, was nominated for the 2006 Nursing Excellence Award from ajcjobs.com for her exceptional performance, dedication, strength and improving the lives of others. May 7, 2007 MSM President Dr. John E. Maupin Jr. announced new appointments of four administrative positions: William A. Alexander was appointed vice president of Administration and Strategic Management. Howard W. Jordan II was named General Counsel. Sally M. Davis was to serve as acting vice president of Institutional Advancement. Cherie A. Richardson assumed the post of executive director of the Office of Marketing and Communications. May 4, 2007 MSM Dean and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Eve J. Higginbotham was honored when 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. recognized six local business and community leaders with its "Atlantans on the Move" Award. MSM Dean and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Eve J. Higginbotham was nominated for the 2007 Healthcare Heroes Award. The MSM National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) Education and Outreach Team received the 2007 Stellar Award from the Rotary National Award for Space Achievement Foundation. April 30- May 3, 2007 Associate Professor of Medical Education and Associate Director for Education at the NCPC Janice Herbert-Carter, M.D., M.G.A., F.A.C.P., was accepted as a fellow in the 2007-2008 class of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women. Knoxville-born Dr. William Lynn Weaver, professor and chair of surgery, presented his "Mission for the Youth" at two free programs at Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church and a Knoxville Regional Minority Health Coalition reception at Cherokee Health Systems. April 20, 2007 Xaviera M. Estes received the prestigious award of National Member of the Year during the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) meeting in San Francisco, Calif. April 19, 2007 Dr. Henrie Treadwell, director of Community Voices and associate director of Development at the MSM NCPC, was honored at the Congressional Black Caucus Health and Wellness of the African-American Male: America's Challenge, Our Imperative, and Conference in Washington, D.C. The advocacy award was presented for her tireless and phenomenal work in men's health as well as her commitment and dedication to ensuring that the nation achieves health justice and health equity. Dean and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Eve J. Higginbotham was honored by the 100 Black Men with the prestigious "Atlantans on the Move" award. April 18, 2007 Former Surgeon General and Director of the Center of Excellence on Health Disparities Dr. David Satcher was a luncheon speaker during the Third Annual Mental Health Research Conference. Dr. Henrie M. Treadwell, director of Community Voices and Men's Health Initiatives, participated in a meeting titled "Saving Men's Lives" held in D.C. The meeting was attended by individuals from eight Community Voices sites, their state representatives and senators. April 17, 2007 MSM's President's Office announces the rollout of the institutional seal. The new seal is to be used on all items that are strictly associated with the President's Office (e.g., diplomas). April 16, 2007 Kiantra Ramey, Ph.D., student in MSM's Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences, presented her research at the Georgia Academy of Science Conference held at Albany State University. She placed first in the graduate student oral presentation competition, winning $100. The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering appointed Director of the Center of Excellence on Health Disparities Dr. David Satcher to its Advisory Council. April 13, 2007 Nationally known doctors and researchers from MSM presented their work before an array of Georgia-based journalists at the "Gnat Line News Briefing 2007: Real Health and Medical News for Working Reporters." Speakers included Alec J. Davidson, Ph.D. (assistant professor, Neuroscience Institute); Byron J. Ford, Ph.D. (associate professor, Anatomy and Biology); and Rhonda C. Holliday (research assistant professor, Community Health and Preventive Medicine). April 12, 2007 MSM Office of Marketing and Communications announces the rollout of a new customer service system. This system is designed to serve all MSM constituents with media relations, marketing collateral, print and video needs in order to provide the attention needed to produce successful outcomes for programs and/or projects. Brandi Brandon, Ph.D. candidate in MSM's Biomedical Sciences Program, presented her research recently at the University of Alabama, Birmingham Health Disparities Conference. She placed third in the graduate student poster competition. She won $300, tickets to the Charles Barkley Health Disparities Gala, and an autographed book from Dr. LaSalle Lafalle, the conference guest speaker. April 11, 2007 Director of the Center of Excellence on Health Disparities at the Morehouse School of Medicine Dr. David Satcher was honored by the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute (GBPI). MSM President Dr. John E. Maupin Jr. is one of 17 named to the Greater Grady Task Force board. April 5, 2007 MSM announces the rollout of its new logo. The new logo presents a classic yet contemporary look. The new logo is just one aspect of the MSM brand rollout. April 3, 2007 MSM Department of Medicine welcomes four physicians, all internists, to the department's General Internal Medicine section: Dr. Oluranti Aladesanmi, Dr. Bamidele Adesunloye, Dr. Oluwatoyin (Toyin) Olantinwo and Dr. Balsam El Hammali. March 23, 2007 MSM celebrated the inauguration of John E. Maupin Jr., D.D.S., M.B.A, as its fifth president. The theme of the inauguration is "Celebrating a Commitment to Communities and Reputation for Excellence." Maupin's investiture was held at the Martin Luther King Jr International Chapel on the campus of Morehouse College. The culminating celebration, the inaugural gala took place at the Georgia Aquarium. Brandi Brandon, a Ph.D. candidate in Biomedical Sciences Program, was elected to serve a three-year term as a member of the Associate Member Council (AMC) of the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR). A record number of fourth-year students (73 percent) received residency appointments in primary care specialties during the Match Day Program. March 21-22, 2007 MSM celebrated the inauguration of its fifth president, Dr. John E. Maupin Jr. March 19-20, 2007 MSM President Dr. John E. Maupin was interviewed on the "Frank and Wanda in the Morning" show on WVEE V-103FM. Maupin discussed inaugural activities and his vision for MSM. MSM Director of the Center of Excellence on Health Disparities Dr. David Satcher was honored as a recipient of a Research! America Advocacy Award. Satcher received the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Award for Sustained National Leadership at the 11th March 16, 2007 Nathaniel Wesley, F.A.C.H.E., former director, Division of Health Management at Florida A&M University and Steven Grant, F.A.C.H.E., chief executive officer, Legacy Medical Center (formerly Southwest Hospital) discussed "Black Hospitals in America: A journey in time from the past to the future" during the Public Health Leadership Seminars. MSM's Dr. Patricia Rodney was honored by the African Student Association of Georgia State University at the "In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens: Celebrating Womanist Activism in Africa and the African Diaspora event. March 14, 2007 An abstract on breast cancer prevention and treatment by inhibiting the signaling pathways of an important cytoline (leptin, that is related to obesity) was accepted to be presented as A "LATE-BREAKING ABSTRACT" at the 2007 Congress of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). March 13, 2007 The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NBIB) announced the appointment of MSM Director of the Center of Excellence on Health Disparities Dr. David Satcher as one of four new members to its Advisory Council. The council serves as the principal advisory body to NBIB, a component of the National Institutes of Health within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The council, which meets three times a year, provides recommendations on the conduct and support of biomedical imaging and bioengineering research and research training. Other new Advisory Council members are: Rebecca Mary Bergman, B.S., Richard Lorne Ehman, M.D., and Katherine Whittaker Ferrerra, Ph.D. March 9, 2007 MSM President Dr. John E. Maupin appeared on "Atlanta's Best News" on 1380 WAOK AM. Maupin discussed the inaugural activities, set for March 22 to 23 and MSM's community impact. MSM President Dr. John E. March 8, 2007 MSM First-Year Surgical Resident Dr. Nii Darko was one of four Grady-based residents featured on a national television program, 'CNN; Special Investigations Unit-Grady Anatomy,' documentary that followed the lives of Darko and three Emory residents. The one-hour television special was broadcast on CNN. MSM Director of the Center of Excellence on Health Disparities Dr. David Satcher, was interviewed by Reader's Digest. Maupin, Jr. will be featured on the cover and there will be other articles and photos about MSM research. Dr. Persharon Dixon ('95) is an MSM alum and the medical director of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Children's Health Project, a program which consists of two mobile health units providing mental health and medical care for an extended pediatric population ages 0-24 years. Dixon is scheduled to appear on the Today Show to discuss further details of this unique program. Other members included: Dr. Gail Mattox, ex-officio member; Dr. Bhushan Agharkar, adjunct assistant professor and associate residency training director, elected member; Dr Leo Noragbon, chief resident, member in training. MSM Director of the National Center of Excellence on Health Disparities, Dr. David Satcher received a proclamation for his extraordinary contributions in the field of medicine, particularly for his work in the area of mental health. This proclamation was presented by District 10 Councilmember CT Martin during the regularly scheduled meeting of the Atlanta City Council. February 27, 2007 MSM Chief of Surgery Dr. Lynn Weaver and his testimony before a Georgia House Special Certificate of Need (CON) Committee was featured in the Georgia Society of General Surgeons (GSGS) and the Georgia Legislative Web site. Weaver presented testimony on HB337. The bill required General Surgery to be treated as a single specialty. February 22, 2007 Lesa (Miles) Black, Ph.D., a 2005 graduate of MSM's Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences Program, received an individual National Research Service Award (NRSA) from NIH. The award supported her postdoctoral research project entitled" TRIM5alpha, HIV-1 Uncoating and the Ubiqutin-Proteasome Pathway." February 21, 2007 MSM Director of the Center of Excellence on Health Disparities Dr. David Satcher was featured during a live radio discussion with Reverend Al Sharpton on health as a civil rights issue. February 20, 2007 The MSM Prevention Research Center (PRC) has entered into a $100,000 contract with the Pfizer Foundation to focus on the dissemination of its cross-site program assessment and evaluation capacity-building activities conducted between 2004 and 2006 among community-based HIV prevention programs in the southern region of the United States. February 19, 2007 Dr. John E. Maupin received the Healthcare Industry Award during the 10th Dr. Byron Ford was awarded a $3.2 million CounterACT Grant from NIH for research that may counter the medical effects of modern-day chemical and biological warfare agents. William Lynn Weaver, M.D., chair and professor, Department of Surgery, and program director, Surgical Residency Training Program, began serving a one-year term as the second vice president for the Southeastern Surgical Congress. Weaver was elected to the post during the annual scientific meeting of the SSC, the largest regional society in the U.S. February 16, 2007 Brandi Brandon, a Ph.D. candidate in Biomedical Sciences Program, has been selected from a record number of applicants as one of eight candidates to run for a spot on the American Association for Cancer Research's (AACR) Associate Member Council because of her "commitment and dedication to providing representation of the needs of early-career scientists." February 14, 2007 Dr. L. Ray Matthews joined the Department of Surgery, Trauma Surgery Team, as an assistant professor of clinical surgery. He was practicing in Rochester, Minn., at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Matthews completed his residency and graduated from MSM in 1997. The Department of Family Medicine welcomes its newest faculty member, Micheal Quentin Fité, M.D., F.A.A.C.P, assistant professor of clinical family medicine. Fité came to Family Medicine from Milwaukee, Wisc., where he was the medical director of Westside Healthcare Association, Inc. He completed his residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin Saint Mary's Family Medicine Program in 2001. Fité received his medical degree from Meharry Medical College-School of Medicine in Nashville, Tenn., in 1998. February 13, 2007 An interview with Gary Gibbons, M.D., professor of Medicine and director, Cardiovascular Research Institute, was featured in the February 2007 issue of Points North Magazine. February 12, 2007 Dr. Elizabeth Ofilia, MSM Associate Dean of Clinical Research, professor of Medicine and director, Clinical Research Center, and chief Section of Cardiology, along with Dr. Gary Gibbons, MSM professor of Medicine and director, Cardiovascular Research Institute, were interviewed at the studios of Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB-TV) for a special television program regarding cardiovascular health. February 9, 2007 MSM Dean Eve J. Higginbotham, M.D., was quoted in the Feb 8, 2007 edition of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC). The focus of the story, "New Strategy for Children's Hospital Care," is the new plan for Hughes Spaulding Children's Hospital. February 8, 2007 Henrie Treadwell, Ph.D., senior social scientist at the NCPC, published a paper in the February issue of the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved. The paper, titled "Oral Health is the Measure of a Just Society," discussed the need for a national health plan that includes oral health care to promote social justice and oral health for all. February 7, 2007 Assistant Project Director of the MSM Regional Coordinating Center for Hurricane Response Kimberly G. Bell and her family were selected to serve as the South Metro Walk Ambassador Family for the 2007 March of Dimes Walk America. February 6, 2007 Dr. Frank L. Douglas, an Alpha Omega Alpha visiting professor and executive director of the Center for Biomedical Innovation at MIT, presented on the topic of Druggability: The Challenge to Productivity in the Pharma Industry at the The 19th. February 5, 2007 Kaya Jones, MSM fourth-year medical student is the 2006-2007 GE Medical Scholar, a two-month clinical/public health elective which was held in conjunction with the University of Ghana Medical School in Ghana, West Africa, focusing on areas of critical need such as HIV/AIDS, diabetes, tuberculosis, heart disease, cancer and infant mortality. The Department of Surgery featured five poster presentations during the Poster Session at the Scientific Program of the Southern Surgical Conference. February 2, 2007 William Lynn Weaver, M.D., chair of the Department of Surgery, began serving as the new president-elect of the Atlanta Medical Association, Inc., and effective January 2008, plans to hold post of president. January 25, 2007 MSM Dean and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Eve J. Higginbotham and MSM Chair of Community Health and Preventive Medicine Dr. Daniel Blumenthal addressed the Georgia Joint sub-committee on Health and Human Services. Dr. George Rust, interim director, NCPC, and professor of Family Medicine, was elected chair of the Georgia Minority Health Advisory Council. MSM hosted the Environmental Health Information Outreach Program, which is a division of the National Library of Medicine. Elizabeth Ofili, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.C., professor and chief of cardiology, will provide an overview of the environmental cardiology discipline during the meeting. Mc Neal, Ph.D., director of the Center for Community Health and Service-Learning in the Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine, received a $25,000 two-year grant that allowed Bahati Banks, program manager, to participate in the Service Learning Emerging Leaders Initiative. Chinedu Ivonye, M.D., F.A.C.P., assistant professor of clinical medicine in the Department of Medicine, received the J. Willis Hurst Bedside Teaching Award presented by the Georgia Chapter of the American College of Physicians. L. DiAnne Bradford, Ph.D., professor of clinical psychiatry, in the MSM Department of Psychiatry, received two distinct honors in the field of mental health. Bradford received a five-year, $1.2 million R25 grant from the National Institute of Mental Health and she was selected as a member of the African American Mental Research Scientist Consortium.
