Grady Media Coverage: The Recent Crisis at Grady Memorial Hospital
Morehouse School of Medicine-Emory University Statement on JCAHO Preliminary Findings December 3, 2007
We have been made aware of the preliminary findings of the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Organizations following its recent survey of the Grady Health System. Joint Commission surveys evaluate hospitals' structures and patient care processes. We await the official report later this month. This preliminary report, which found a number of process deficiencies, underscores the need for additional resources and more emphasis on restructuring to ensure adequate funding for Grady Health System now and in the future. The persistent under-funding of the Grady Health System over the past ten years contributes to the problems identified in the most recent Joint Commission survey. Emory and Morehouse are working together to help Grady Health System address the problems cited by the Joint Commission. These challenges also underscore the difficulties our medical schools face in recruiting high-quality residents into the hospital for a multi-year period. Maintaining the highest possible standards of patient care remains the priority of both medical schools as we work with Grady to address the Joint Commission findings.
