Morehouse School of Medicine Faculty, Residents, Students Take Part in Rally to Save Grady Memorial Hospital
A number of administrators, faculty, residents, and students of Morehouse School of Medicine participated in the Nov. 26, 2007 "Grady is Vital" Rally in an attempt to ensure the future of financially-strapped Grady Memorial Hospital. The Atlanta-based medical facility serves as one of the Southeast Region's few Level One trauma centers and is widely recognized for its care for underinsured and uninsured populations. The Rally was sponsored by HealthStat, a student health organization containing MSM and Emory University School of Medicine students. MSM and Emory residents and students receive their training at Grady. The widely-attended event was held in front of the public hospital on the same day the Grady Board was scheduled to vote on whether the hospital should be directed in the future by a non-profit board. Later that evening, the creation of a non-profit board received a unanimous vote with a variety of conditions attached to the resolution. MSM personnel were featured in a number of news stories surrounding the historic Grady Memorial Hospital vote. President John E. Maupin Jr. was quoted in the Nov. 27, 2007 Atlanta Journal-Constitution "Grady OKs change, with strings," and was interviewed by WAGA-TV Fox 5 Atlanta, and National Public Radio (NPR) station WABE-FM. MSM Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs Dr. Lawrence Sanders Jr. and MSM Interim Dean of Students and Vice Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. Ngozi Anachebe were recorded by news media as they spoke at a rally in front of Grady. MSM student Joy Baker and MSM surgical resident Dr. Jabaris Swain also spoke to the crowd at the rally. Swain was interviewed by WAGA-TV Fox 5 and Baker was taped by WSB-TV Atlanta Channel 2 . MSM Third Year MD student Socrates Brito was interviewed by Azteca America-TV. |
