As a health-care leader, public policy expert and dental practitioner, he has created a legacy rooted in his passion for improving the health and well-being of underserved individuals and communities. A native of Los Angeles, Calif., Maupin received his undergraduate training at San Jose State College and earned a D.D.S. degree in 1972 from Meharry Medical College's School of Dentistry. The following year he completed a general dentistry residency at Provident Hospital in Baltimore, Md., and subsequently received an M.B.A. degree in 1979 from Loyola College in Baltimore. Prior to joining MSM on July 1, 2006, Maupin served as president and chief executive officer of Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn., for 12 years, where he was the first alumnus and the second dentist to lead the institution. Maupin is no stranger to Morehouse School of Medicine, having served as the institution's executive vice president and chief operating officer from 1989 to 1994. His other senior administrative positions have included serving as chief executive officer of Southside Healthcare Inc., located in Atlanta, Ga., and one of the largest federally qualified community health centers in the Southeastern United States; and deputy commissioner for medical services with the Baltimore City Health Department, Baltimore, Md., where he was administratively responsible for all public health programs of the department, including the divisions of Clinical Services, Environmental Health, Aging and Community Health, Maternal and Child Health, and Health Policy and Planning. He began his career in health-care administration in 1976 as dental director with the West Baltimore Community Health Center, where he established its first dental clinic and later was named president of the medical staff. In addition to his extraordinarily diverse administrative background, Maupin maintained a part-time general dentistry practice while in Baltimore, and also was a career officer in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring after more than 28 years of service in 1997. Maupin has a distinguished record as a health-care expert and adviser, currently serving on the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education Accreditation of the U.S. Department of Education and the Governor's Commission on Men's Health (GA). In 1984, Maupin was elected by his peers as president of the National Dental Association.
