The Science of Disease Seminar Series

The Science of Disease Seminar Series is an ongoing lecture series at the Morehouse School of Medicine. Launched on October 11, 2006 by Dr. Higginbotham and Dr. Ford, this series pairs clinicians and basic scientists in one lecture, linked to each other by a common disease process.
Two wonderful encore presentations from the Science of Disease Seminar Series kicked off the Inaugural Events last Thursday in the NCPC Auditorium. If you missed "The Nerve of It! Glaucoma and Neuroprotection" with Byron Ford, PhD and Eve J. Higginbotham, MD and "A Dangerous Combination: Hypertension and Stroke" presented by Gary H. Gibbons, MD and James W. Reed, MD, do not despair. There are more Seminars to come. Please save the date of April 26, 2007 when the topic will be, "African Americans and the Cancer Crisis" with: Shanita D. Williams-Brown, PhD, MPH, APRN-BC and Veena N. Rao, PhD. The Morehouse School of Medicine designates this educational activity for up to 1 hour in AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s) ™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Other future topics to look forward to include, "Vision Disorders/Diabetic Retinopathy," "HIV/AIDS: The Total Impact," "Obesity and the Cardiometabolic Syndrome," "Sleep Apnea - A Silent Epidemic?," "Asthma Care: Best Science, Best Practice," "From Mice to Men and Women: What Transgenic Mice Teach Us About Care and Cure of Sickle Cell Disease," "Polycystic Ovarian Disease," "Consequences of Salt Sensitivity: Hypertension, Target Organ Damage and Hypovitaminosis D." "Never before have the possibilities for scientific advances been greatest and yet the gap between basic scientists and clinicians has become increasingly difficult to close. Basic scientists must compete in an extremely competitive environment and clinicians are progressively burdened with regulatory standards and significant declines in reimbursements forcing them to spend more and more time delivering clinical care. Let us all take a break for a moment and explore the links we share. Let the scientific dialogue begin and new opportunities for collaboration will undoubtedly follow. We look forward to seeing you at the next seminar"
