"Mental health problems are among the most common and treatable disorders affecting children, adolescents, and adults. Providing the necessary financial and human resources for prevention and intervention is critical if we are serious about improving the lives of psychiatric patients. It takes more than a village to address these problems - it takes the commitment of citizens, health care providers, and legislators, both locally and nationally," stated Smith. According to the GPPA, Smith was selected for his "unwavering professional and personal dedication to psychiatry, mentorship, and advancement of treatments for the mentally ill." Smith was selected for the honor in 2007 and presented the award in 2008. "Dr. Smith was selected by peers throughout the state of Georgia for this award and it is an honor to have Dr. Smith as a colleague and member of the faculty in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Morehouse School of Medicine. As vice chair for Education and director of the Psychiatry Clerkship in the department, Dr. Smith has inspired numerous residents, medical students and faculty over the years.
