Contact: Gayle Converse 404-756-6701 gconverse@msm.edu Atlanta Summit to Assemble Leaders of Science Morehouse School of Medicine President Emeritus and Neuroscience Chair Listed Among Speakers Atlanta - More than 70 speakers and additional leaders of the nation's scientific community are expected to gather next week as Atlanta become the stage for the Georgia Bio 8th Annual Georgia Life Sciences Summit. The Sept. 24, 2008 event at the Georgia World Congress Center will showcase the most advanced research and product developments in biomedicine, medical devices, agriculture and bioenergy. The theme of the 2008 Summit is "Molecules, Materials and Minds: Building Georgia's Innovation Economy." Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue, former U.S. Senator Bob Dole, Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin and Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) President Emeritus Louis W. Sullivan top the list of plenary speakers. Presenting at the Summit are: MSM Neuroscience Institute Chair Peter MacLeish; Biotechnology Industry Organization President and CEO James Greenwood; U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Chief Science Officer Tanja Popovic; Solvay Pharmaceuticals President and CEO Stephen Hill; University of Georgia President Michael F. Adams; Emory University President James W. Wagner; and Georgia Research Alliance President and CEO C. Michael Cassidy. A conference highlight will be a plenary session featuring the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience (CBN) distinguished researchers' explorations into one of science's last and most daunting frontiers -- the brain. The CBN is a National Science Foundation funded consortium of Georgia's research universities. The Georgia Summit has become the Southeast's premier life sciences conference and one of the largest state biotechnology showcases in the nation. More than 800 professionals from Georgia and across the U.S. are expected to attend. The Summit also includes an exhibit hall featuring the latest technology advances from universities and corporations and a scientific poster contest for university and industry researchers. The 2008 gathering will serve as a precursor to the 2009 Biotechnology Industry Organization's International Convention - the largest biotech conference in the World. Atlanta also will host the 2009 Convention, May 18-21. The spring event is expected to attract 20,000 professionals from 70 nations and 48 states.
