Public Health Summer Fellows Program

 



PROGRAM OBJECTIVE

Encourage Fellows to choose a public health career through providing work experience and training  in public health.

 

 

 

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

The Public Health Summer Fellows Program offers an eight week summer program to rising junior or senior college students and recent college and university graduates. The purpose of the program is to expose under-represented minority students to the excitement, relevance and promise of public health at a time when the experience can influence their professional goals and career choice. The program utilizes the faculty and staff from various public health institutions within metro Atlanta.

 

 

 

PROGRAM OUTLINE

The program is scheduled to commence with orientation on Thursday June 4, 2009 and conclude August 7, 2009. Participants will receive a schedule of events prior to their arrival. Orientation will be followed by a (1) day diversity workshop and a 35 hour (1 week) graduate course in The Principles of Public Health. This course is designed to acquaint students with the:

 

·         principles of Epidemiology

·         disease Surveillance

·         disease investigation in the field of public health

 

Participants will be assigned to community based public health internships. These research

projects are supervised by experienced public health professionals and scientists. Weekly seminars will cover recent public health issues.  Fellows will have access to  Libraries and campus activities of the participating institutions. The  use of public transportation may be necessary to reach certain project sites.  Weekly leisure   group activities are planned to foster bonding and team spirit.

 

 

STIPEND

Fellow’s will receive a stipend for successfully completing the program.  Housing, meals,  and travel to and from Atlanta, Georgia will be provided. Local public transportation costs will also be covered.
