Our lab is interested in the molecular pathogenesis of HIV/AIDS. Our current projects focus on the role that the viral protein Nef plays in AIDS pathogenesis. We have found that the Nef protein is secreted from infected cells in small membrane-bound packages called "exosomes." These exosomes can fuse with non-infected cells and cause a variety of effects, including programmed cell death. Nef exosomes are also present in the plasma of HIV infected individuals. In collaboration with Dr. Vincent Bond at Morehouse School of Medicine, we are exploring the possibility that Nef exosomes could represent a major source of the T cell depletion, a hallmark of HIV/AIDS. We are currently testing this hypothesis in non-human primates and strategies are currently being devised to develop therapeutic vaccines and anti-virals based on this model. Our lab also provides Luminex assays, mass spectrometry and Proteomics services for the school. Those interested in initiating a project with the Proteomics core should contact Dr. Powell.
