| | Ion Channels and Neurological Disorders The goal of Dr. Xiong's research is to understand the role of certain ion channels and membrane receptors in neurological disorders. Brain ischemia, for example, initiates various biochemical changes such as increased glutamate release, brain acidosis, and oxidative stress. These changes favor the activation of various membrane receptors and ion channels. Activation of these channels contributes either directly or indirectly to intracellular ion disturbance (e.g. calcium overload) resulting in neuronal injury. The studies in Dr. Xiong’s laboratory focus on several calcium-permeable ion channels, including glutamate receptor-gated channels, acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs), and TRPM7 channels. Using a combination of patch-clamp recording, fluorescence calcium imaging, biochemistry and molecular biology techniques, in vitro and in vivo models of neurological disorders, Dr. Xiong’s team investigates the electrophysiological properties, pharmacological profiles, and the pathological roles of these channels in neuronal injury.
