Functional Roles of Cell Junctions and Cell Membranes in Maintaining the Normal Transparent Lens

For the past 25 years, our NIH/NEI-funded research project has focused on elucidating the functional roles of the lens cells, their membranes, cytoskeletons and their junctions with each other, in maintaining the normal transparent lens. More recently, by using several mutant and gene-knockout mouse models, our lab has focused on (1) structural and biochemical alterations of gap junctions and their connexins associated with cataractogenesis, and (2) the formation and functions of lens-specific aquaporin junctions that are involved in assuring a normally-maturating clear lens.
