Educational Environment
The Morehouse School of Medicine is a member of the Atlanta University Center, a consortium of five independent institutions of higher education located on contiguous campuses less than a mile west from the center of downtown Atlanta. Other schools in the center include Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. Together the Center's institutions constitute the largest predominantly African-American educational complex in the world.
Other major educational and research institutions in and around Atlanta include Agnes Scott College, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, Emory University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Georgia State University. All major colleges and universities in the Atlanta Area function as members of the Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education (ARCHE), allowing students at member institutions to register and enroll in courses at other member institutions without incurring any additional tuition costs.
The City
In addition to being a major center for higher education and research, Atlanta offers a variety of cultural opportunities, including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Ballet, the Alliance Theatre and several smaller theater companies. The High Museum of Art is an architectural masterpiece that houses an extensive collection of its own and hosts several first-rate touring collections each year.
Atlanta is also known for its world-famous centers honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. Sports and entertainment facilities include the Atlanta Braves' Turner Field, the impressive Georgia Dome, broadcasting's CNN Center, the historic Fox Theater, the Philips Arena, Zoo Atlanta, the new Georgia Aquarium, many amazing restaurants and a growing number of Blues, Jazz and Dance clubs. It's hardly surprising that many of America's best known and respected African-American business people, politicians, and professionals call Atlanta home, making this city one of the premier centers of African-American culture in the country.
Finding Us
With the busiest airport in the United States, Atlanta is not hard to find. The school's main (Westview) campus is located North of Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, just west of downtown Atlanta, and just to the north of Interstate 20 (I-20).
