Bessie Jones, MD ['84], MPH
Bessie Jones, M.D., M.P.H., (Family Medicine/Preventive Medicine) established the Chapman Jones Memorial Endowment Fund at MSM in 2007 for the Public Health and Preventive Medicine Residency Program. She also is a charter member of the Hugh M. Gloster Society.
A native of Macon, Georgia, Jones grew up in a blue-collar family that stressed the value of education. She is the first in her family to attend college, and is a graduate of Talladega College, Talladega, Alabama. Jones always wanted to become a physician; however with four daughters to educate, her family did not have money for medical school. After marrying and raising four children, she applied to MSM and was offered a place in the freshman class. Jones completed the two-year, basic medical sciences curriculum at MSM before transferring to Emory University to complete her M.D. degree.
Jones credits her alma mater for the opportunity to fulfill her personal aspiration. She says her proudest moment was her medical school Commencement in 1984. Her favorite quote is “Never stop striving for excellence in whatever ways necessary to make the world a better place.”
Jones established the "Chapman Jones Memorial Endowment Fund" at MSM in 2007 with a gift of $100,000. The Fund supports public health community projects in the Public Health and Preventive Medicine Residency Program.
