Lemuel Leon Dent, MD ['85], M.S., M.S.C.R.
Lemuel Leon Dent, M.D., (Surgery) is associate professor and vice-chairman of the department of Surgery and chief of Surgical Clinical Care at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. From 1998 to 2007, he served as assistant professor of Surgery at Morehouse School of Medicine; director of Trauma Service at MSM from 2004-2008; and as co-director of the Intermediate Care Unit at Grady Memorial Hospital from 2003-2005. Dr. Dent received the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Award for his outstanding leadership and devotion to the MSM Alumni Association.
His childhood ambition was to be a physician, and MSM assisted him in achieving his goal. “Morehouse School of Medicine is the first school where I really felt at home,” said Dr. Dent. Among his favorite faculty members was Dr. Cyril Moore, then chairman of the Department of Biochemistry. “He was a deep thinker, very compassionate, such a great educator, and he inspired you to learn.”
Dr. Dent served as President of the Morehouse School of Medicine National Alumni Association from 2002 to 2004. The Annual Golf Tournament was started under Dr. Dent’s leadership as a way to generate scholarship support. He has served as a mentor to the students and remains commitment to Morehouse School of Medicine and the Alumni Association.
