Public Health/General Preventive Medicine Residency Program

  • Welcome to the Morehouse School of Medicine Public Health/General Preventive Medicine Residency Program

The Morehouse School of Medicine Residency Program in Public Health/General Preventive Medicine (MSM PMR) is a two-year, fully accredited program offering the academic and practicum requirements for training in this field. Academic requirements are satisfied through matriculation at the MSM Master of Public Health Program. Residents complete the practicum requirements through fieldwork at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Georgia Department of Public Health and other local health departments and agencies.

Its mission is to train qualified physicians to promote healthy behavior and prevent disease, injury and premature death. The program will teach residents to understand the health risks associated with social, cultural, and behavioral factors; identify and address health needs in individuals and populations; understand and address the impact of health disparities among racial and ethnic groups; and recognize and eliminate behaviors that lead to injury and death.

Our specific goal is to train minority physicians to assume leadership positions in public health administration, public policy, academia, research and the private sector. This residency offers wide and diverse experiences in which satisfy board requirements for the American Board of Preventive Medicine. Graduates who complete this program are eligible for membership in the American College of Preventive Medicine. This program has also been fully accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education since its inception in 1986.Graduates of the MSM PMR program obtain careers in the specialty at local, state, and federal health agencies, academia, managed care organizations and the private sector.
