The 10-week Academically Prepared for EXcellence (APEX) Program, an expansion of the former M.D. Summer Program, identifies and recruits highly motivated, economically or educationally disadvantaged students who have a demonstrated potential and ability to pursue a career in medicine. The program is especially designed for students who have completed a bachelor’s degree and may not have been successful on previous attempts to enter medical school. Students chosen to attend APEX participate in an intense MCAT preparation course, clinical shadowing experiences and attend classes in a demanding curriculum with the matriculating first-year medical students. In addition, a variety of workshops including Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Personalized Study Approaches, Professionalism and Interviewing Skills and Writing Your Personal Statement are included. An applicant's performance in APEX will receive serious consideration by the Admissions Committee when that applicant's file is under review. All APEX Program students will be considered for medical school interview upon receipt of their completed AMCAS and MSM applications.
Applicants for the APEX Program must have completed a bachelor’s degree by the start of the program and must have taken the MCAT at least once by the time of application. Academic prerequisites for medical school (e.g. one year of General Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, General Physics, College Mathematics and English Composition) must also be completed with passing grades.
No MCAT or GPA can guarantee how well an applicant may do in medical school, but we have found that our APEX Program is a good indicator as to whether an applicant can achieve the M.D. degree.
- Cumulative transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended
- Three letters of recommendation (at least two from science professors)
- MCAT Test Scores (minimum score must be no less than 20)
- MSM APEX Program application
This year there will be a cost associated with the APEX program for the summer of 2014. The cost will include the following: MCAT preparation course, Registration of classes with First-Year Medical students, along with a variety of workshops. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Richard D. Barnette, M. Ed., Associate Director of Admissions and Recruitment at firstname.lastname@example.org.
