    Goal & Course Offerings

    The goal of the Epidemiology Track is to prepare students as epidemiologists to analyze the health problems of communities and identify approaches to reducing racial and ethnic health disparities. Graduates of this track will strengthen the public health workforce by conducting epidemiological research that contributes to the elimination of health disparities in minority communities.

     

    Required Track Courses

    MPH 517 Statistical Computer Methods I (3 credit hours)
    *Prerequisite: MPH 500 Biostatistics
    This course provides intermediate level of SAS and SPSS to gain proficiency in the use of data management, processing and storage, manipulation and retrieval of data and statistical summaries are emphasized.

    MPH 536 Biostatistics Methods (3 credit hours)
    *Prerequisite: MPH 500 Biostatistics
    This course covers the fundamental aspects of experimental design as well as regression and multi variant analysis. This course builds on MPH 500 Fundamentals of Biostatistics.

    MPH 601 Intermediate Epidemiology Methods (3 credit hours)
    *Prerequisite: MPH 502 Epidemiology
    This course discusses methodological issues important to the design of epidemiological studies of both infectious and non-infectious diseases are covered at an intermediate level. Topics include formulation of a research question, types of studies, sample size, sampling methods, biases and confounding, data collection instruments and the presentation and interpretation of data.

    MPH 701. Advanced Epidemiology (3 credit hours)
    *Prerequisite: MPH 601 Intermediate Epidemiologic Methods
    This course provides a broader and more in depth presentation of epidemiologic concepts and methods with the aims of advancing epidemiologic reasoning abilities and enhancing proficiency for epidemiologic research and practice. It provides a more rigorous presentation and discussion of specific epidemiologic concepts, methodologic issues, and principles which underlie analytical techniques for advancing scientific inquiry and program decision making.
