Frequently Asked Questions

  • As a mentor, how will the MSM eMentoring program benefit me?
    • Serving as a mentor could benefit you in several ways. These ways include improving communication, listening, and collaborative learning skills and reenergizing mentor creativity. Mentors also often feel a personal sense of satisfaction knowing that they are helping MSM staff, as well as other generations, achieve their career goals. Mentors can create a lasting legacy on those they mentor, passing on values and inspiration that can be felt in the field far into the future.
  • How will I benefit from the MSM eMentoring program by serving as a mentee?
    • Serving as a mentee will offer benefits to individuals that could include developing knowledge and skills from their mentor, learning new perspectives, building career networks, and assisting with the achievement of short- and long-term mentoring goals. A good mentor can also help mentees boost their career confidence and offer other career perspectives.
  • How long is the MSM eMentoring program?
    • The eMentoring program runs on a 6-month plan. It is highly recommended, but not required, that the mentor and mentee continue the relationship after the duration of the program.
  • Do I get to choose my own mentor/mentee?
    • Participants start by completing an online profile. The system then will use algorithms to match mentees and mentors in mentoring relationships based on profile question matches and personality matches. Participants will be notified of the results.
  • How many times should I meet with my mentor/mentee?
    • Mentors and mentees are required to have at least five meetings during the six-month period; these meetings can be in-person, by phone, or online. It is recommended that participants meet at least once face-to-face during the duration of the program. Please note that the MSM eMentoring program does offer a Meet Your Mentor event to facilitate this process.
  • Is there a limit on how many times mentors and mentees can communicate?
    • There is no ceiling on the amount of times you should contact your mentee/mentor but we recommend participants at least communicate weekly just to check in with each other.
  • How many in-person events do I have to attend during the duration of the MSM eMentoring program?
    • The events are not required, though they are strongly encouraged. Program events have been tailored to provide additional training, insight, or resources to mentor/mentee matches in an engaging format.
  • What if I don’t get along with my mentor/mentee?
    • Please email all concerns to eMentoring@msm.edu. Though we take all concerns seriously, we will try to overcome relationship issues. The last resort is to break the mentoring relationship.
  • Can I keep in contact with my mentor/mentee once we complete the MSM eMentoring Program?
    • Yes! We recommend that you keep in contact with your mentor/mentee after your completion of the MSM eMentoring program. Long-term mentoring relationships are the most fulfilling for both the mentor and mentee.
  • If I complete one term with the MSM eMentoring Program, can I sign up for another term?
    • Yes!
