The NFL Drafts Morehouse School of Medicine as a Teammate

The Satcher Health Leadership Institute of Morehouse School of Medicine has teamed up with the National Football League (NFL) to provide a series of town hall-style forums to educate, motivate and mobilize communities to address mental health issues such as dementia, depression, financial and relationship stress and drug and alcohol abuse. The result is an innovative program called “NFL Community Huddle: Taking a Goal Line Stand For Your Mind and Body.”

Representatives from the Satcher Health Leadership Institute are visiting all 30 NFL markets across the country to help government officials, health professionals, former players and other community members come together and create a "game plan" to reduce stigma around mental disorders, in the hope of encouraging individuals to access treatment sooner. Panel members share personal stories and their commitment to decreasing the stigma. Panelists have included Dr. David Satcher, director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute; Mark Kelso, a former defensive back and special teams standout for the Buffalo Bills; Sylvia Mackey, wife of NFL Hall of Fame Player John Mackey; former Detroit Lions quarterback Eric Hipple and WNBA star Chamique Holdsclaw.

In addition to the community huddles, Morehouse School of Medicine is working in conjunction in the University of California San Francisco, the University of Southern California, Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Washington University in St. Louis to expedite neurological evaluation and care for football players experiencing mental disorders like depression and dementia due to head trauma.
