Hybrid Master of Science in Biomedical Technology

Hybrid Master of Science in Biomedical Technology

About the Hybrid MSBT Program

The Hybrid Master of Science in Biomedical Technology (MSBT) degree provides a foundation in the biomedical sciences and advanced training in specific biotechnologies. The goal of the Hybrid MSBT program is to develop the technical expertise of the students in biomedical research methods and instrumentation of interest to them and/or their employers. This online degree designed to gives students the flexibility to pursue distance learning in biomedical technology and is intended to help graduates enter the field of biomedical technology at an advanced level or to further progress them in their career field through this comprehensive offering.

Who

Prospective students interested in the Hybrid MSBT program at Morehouse School of Medicine.

What

This 39-credit hour MSBT degree is designed to prepare graduates for careers in government, academic, and industry laboratories and serve as a pathway to advance training via online learning and practical apprenticeships. The program offers students a unique combination of courses in scientific fundamentals and a variety of practical learning experiences through a distinctive online learning platform and hands on experience through several technical apprenticeships and rotations.

Why

Biotechnology is revolutionizing the diagnosis of diseases. New tests can detect changes in the DNA sequence of genes associated with disease risk and can predict the likelihood that a patient will develop a disease. Early diagnosis is often the key to either preventing disease or slowing disease progress through early treatment, through biomedical technology students can join the innovation of this field by applying contemporary lab techniques to solve problems with biomedical technological solutions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects a 10 percent growth for biological techs, biochemists and biophysicists between 2012 and 2022, and a seven percent increase in microbiologists' jobs. Increased demand for research in the biotechnology field and the aging baby boomer population are the key issues that the BLS names for the positive job market outlook in these fields. That's good news for biochemists, biophysicists and microbiologists, as they held roughly only 49,300 jobs in 2012. The biotech techs, however, were almost double the other three biotech careers combined, expected to be around 88,300 by 2022, up from 80,200 jobs in 2012.
