Dr. Martin received her bachelor's degree in Psychology from Spelman College in 1998. She received her medical degree in 2005 from Morehouse School of Medicine. She completed her internship in Internal Medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago in 2006. Dr. Martin then completed a clinical research fellowship in Dermatology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in 2007. In 2009, she completed a Masters in Public Health, with a concentration in Health Administration and Policy, and residency training in Preventive Medicine, at Morehouse School of Medicine. During her residency, she was a recipient of the American Cancer Society Physician Training Award in Preventive Medicine. Through this training award, Dr. Martin's studies focused on cancer prevention and control, with an emphasis on skin cancer in minority populations.

Her special interests include policy development and health disparities as they relate to both chronic diseases and cancer.
