Dr. Malhotra was trained as a dental surgeon in Bangalore, India, receiving her B.D.S. in 2006. After practicing as a clinician for a short period, she decided to pursue a degree in public health, completing her Master of Public Health (MPH) in public health education from Western Kentucky University (WKU) in Bowling Green, Kentucky in 2009.
During her MPH program, Dr. Malhotra adapted a life skills program for incarcerated children at a regional detention center in Bowling Green, KY. She later completed an internship at this center during which she developed and taught a health education curriculum. As a result of this and other service learning projects at WKU and in the local community, she was awarded the WKU President’s Award for Diversity, in the areas of gender equity, cultural competency and community service.
Prior to joining the Satcher Health Leadership Institute, Dr. Malhotra completed a fellowship in Dental Public Health at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR/NIH) where she conducted research on Oral Health Related Quality of Life.
Dr. Malhotra’s research interests include health equity and human rights, particularly as it applies to youth involved in the juvenile justice system. She is also interested in studying the application of technological advances, like Geographic Information Systems (GIS), to reducing health disparities.
