Morehouse School of Medicine Library Awarded $70,000 Grant from National Library of Medicine

Funds Will be Used to Promote Women's Health Resources Web Portal

The Morehouse School of Medicine Library will develop relationships and programming in an effort to successfully promote dissemination of quality health information resources for consumers as a whole and women, specifically, under a combined $70,000 fund, contracted with National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) in partnership with National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The focus for one portion of funding, a $20,000 contract for consumer outreach projects, focuses on the Library empowering and educating community partners about quality health information through the abundance of resources available within the many NLM, NIH, and ORWH websites. Harnessing the collective power of local libraries and churches, the Library will provide the technology and training necessary for a core of users to be introduced to authoritative health information. The idea is that providing a proper groundwork for seeking health information will become a vital weapon in combating health disparities within minority and underserved populations across the country.

An additional fund of $50,000 was granted to develop a project geared towards the health professional. As the information hub for an institution that embraced “serving the underserved as its sole mission, the MSM Library is uniquely positioned to equip a new generation of health professionals with tools to better serve the most undeserved segment of the world: the minority female population. Lead by some of the brightest health and technology professionals in the country, the MSM Library established a team charged with developing a set of learning tools that will be disseminated to its community of learners here and globally, partnering with institutions in Africa and the Caribbean.

Joe Swanson Jr., Director of the MSM Library will serve as Project Director of the consumer health information initiative, supported by MSM Librarians; Ms. Xiomara Arango, Mrs. Tara Douglas-Williams, and Dr. Roland Welmaker, Sr. The project is titled, “Information Resources: Connecting to Women’s Health on the Internet A Consumer Health Information Initiative”

Dr. Roland Welmaker, Sr. will also serve as the Project Director of the professional health initiative. He will be supported by a leadership team of amazing talent from MSM; Dr. Virginia Davis Floyd, Dr. Cheryl Jones, Mr. Joe Swanson, Jr., and Dr. Jinjie Zheng. The project is titled, “Reaching Minority Health Professionals – at home and around the world: A Women’s Health Resource eLearning Platform Module Series.”
