FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MOREHOUSE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE STUDENTS CLOSING THE GAP FOR NEEDED U.S. DOCTORS

ATLANTA – March 19, 2013 – 52 Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) fourth year students matched to fill the nation’s leading residency programs, with 67 percent focusing in primary care and core specialty.  Primary care and core specialty - including family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, general surgery and emergency medicine - are the most needed physicians in both urban and rural communities. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, low-income, urban and minority communities often have inadequate access to appropriate healthcare and experience higher rates of asthma, obesity and other chronic health conditions.

Of MSM’s fourth year students, 96.7 percent joined 16,390 U.S. medical school seniors to be presented with notice of their residency matches in sealed envelopes, as part of the National Resident Matching Program. MSM students matched above the national average of 94 percent with programs including Johns Hopkins, New York University, University of Southern California, Emory University and MSM’s own prestigious program.
