HRABOWSKI DELIVERS MOREHOUSE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE’S 29TH COMMENCEMENT
University of Maryland, Baltimore County President to Deliver Keynote Address Focused
on Preparing for Careers in Health and Sciences
ATLANTA – May 20, 2013 – Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) held its 29th commencement
exercises on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel
on the campus of Morehouse College at 9 a.m. MSM conferred degrees of M.D., Ph.D.
in biomedical sciences, master of public health, master of science in clinical research,
master of science in biomedical research, master of science in biomedical technology,
and master of science in clinical research. Noted researcher and educator Freeman
A. Hrabowski, III, Ph.D., president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County
delivered the commencement address focusing on the fundamental challenges in preparing
students for careers in the sciences and healthcare.
Hrabowski’s research and publications focus on science and math education, with special
emphasis on minority participation and performance. He chaired the National Academies’
committee that produced the 2011 report, Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation:
America’s Science and Technology Talent at the Crossroads, and was also recently named
by President Barack Obama to chair the newly created President’s Advisory Commission
on Educational Excellence for African Americans.
“Today we take another step in Morehouse School of Medicine’s goal to fill the nation’s
growing need for primary care physicians and healthcare professionals, especially
here in Georgia,” said Dean and Executive Vice President Valerie Montgomery Rice,
M.D. “We are so proud of these students’ accomplishments and look forward to their
continued service and mentorship in our communities.”
MSM presented 85 diplomas to 83 graduates (two students received both a master of
science in clinical research and PhD):
Doctors of Medicine - 53
Masters of Public Health - 21
PhD - 5
Master of Science in Biomedical Research - 3
Master of Science in Clinical Research - 3
MSM presented two honorary degrees to Hrabowski and The Honorable John Edward Porter,
Member of Congress from 1980 to 2001 for the 10th District of Illinois.
