Dr. Maupin Inducted into Hall of Fame

Dr. Maupin Inducted into Hall of Fame
Morehouse School of Medicine President John E. Maupin, Jr., D.D.S., M.B.A., was inducted into the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame on Sept. 24. The internationally respected visionary, change agent and public policy expert was recognized in the 25th “silver” anniversary Hall of Fame ceremony for three decades of service and leadership to a single cause – improving the health and well-being of individuals and underserved communities.
“It is a tremendous honor for me to join the ranks of so many accomplished scholars, leaders and educators who hail from one of the nation’s most distinguished HBCUs. To stand here tonight is a testament of the impact and contributions graduates of historically black institutions are making every day to change lives and communities,” Dr. Maupin said in accepting the award.
Dr. Maupin was honored for his long and distinguished record in health care administration, public health, health care policy and academic medicine. Dr. Robert S. Poole, Sr., vice president of Institutional Advancement at Dr. Maupin’s alma mater Meharry Medical College, presented the award.
Dr. Maupin studied dentistry at Meharry, where his commitment to excellence and zeal for leadership were ignited. His subsequent career took him through a diverse set of roles: dental director of the West Baltimore Community Health Center, deputy commissioner of health for the Baltimore City Health Department, president of the National Dental Association, CEO of Southside Community Health Center, the first alumnus president of Meharry Medical College, and executive vice president of Morehouse School of Medicine.
Today, as the fifth president of Morehouse School of Medicine, Dr. Maupin leads the top-ranked medical school in the country for social mission, and the only medical school to win a $500,000 planning grant from the U.S. Department of Education to create a “Promise Neighborhood” for an underserved community.
Dr. Maupin’s many honors include recognition by peers and leading scientific organizations like the National Dental Association, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health. He is also a distinguished public policy adviser to the U.S. Department of Education and Georgia’s Governor’s Commission on Men’s Health.
