Atlanta -Forty-eight of 56 Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) medical students that will attend the institution's 24th Annual Fall Convocation intend to become first-generation physicians. Eighteen of the 56 have at least one parent that has attained a graduate or doctoral degree, and seven students have at least one parent that did not attend college.

The event will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, 2008 in the Louis W. Sullivan National Center for Primary Care on the MSM campus. Virginia Davis Floyd, M.D., M.P.H., MSM associate professor of Clinical Community Health and Preventive Medicine will present the keynote.

This year, MSM also boasts its largest-ever M.D. class with 56 students. Ten students in this year's M.D. class hold master's degrees in Journalism, Business Administration, Public Health, Biomedical Sciences, Biology, Arts Education, Medical Sciences and Neurobiology.

The numbers of incoming students in the Graduate Educational in Biomedical Sciences program is also the largest ever, with six new students in the Ph.D. program, two students in the school's new Master of Biomedical Sciences program, and four students in the Masters in Clinical Research (two of whom are pursuing dual degrees).

The M.P.H. entering class is also the largest ever with 29 students in the degree program.

"Convocation is the traditional ceremony at the beginning of the academic year. We combine it with the white coat ceremonies for our M.D. program and Ph.D. (and Master's) program and pinning for our M.P.H. students. These ceremonies involve important oaths of professionalism as our students commence their training," said Martha L. Elks, M.D., Ph.D., MSM senior associate dean, Education and Faculty Affairs, professor of Medical Education, and professor of medicine. "These events underscore the important linking of knowledge and excellence with the humanism of service and wisdom that we emphasize in all our programs."
