Morehouse School of Medicine Trustee to Receive 2008 Hansen Award
Atlanta - Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) trustee and health care policy expert Jordan J. Cohen, M.D., has been named the recipient of the 2008 Richard and Barbara Hansen Leadership Award and Distinguished Lectureship at The University of Iowa College of Public Health (CPH).

Atlanta - Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) trustee and health care policy expert Jordan J. Cohen, M.D., has been named the recipient of the 2008 Richard and Barbara Hansen Leadership Award and Distinguished Lectureship at The University of Iowa College of Public Health (CPH).
Cohen is a professor of medicine and public health at George Washington University and president emeritus of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). During his 12 years as AAMC president, Cohen helped establish and lead initiatives to improve medical education, research and patient care.
"Cohen has been described as academic medicine's 'moral compass,' and he is renowned for his efforts to improve health care services for all Americans," said CPH Dean Susan Curry. Prior to his leadership of the AAMC, Cohen served as dean of the medical school and professor of medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and president of the medical staff at University Hospital.
Cohen will present the Hansen Distinguished Lecture "The Need to Fundamentally Reform America's Health Care Delivery System," Friday, Oct. 17, 2008 in Iowa City in conjunction with the 30th Annual Iowa Healthcare Executive Symposium.
In addition to serving on the board of MSM, Cohen is a director of the Washington Advisory Group and serves as chairman of the board of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation for Humanism in Medicine. He also serves on the board of directors of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation of New York, the National Medical Fellowships, the National Library of Medicine, and the Qatar Foundation for Education, and Science Community Development.
A graduate of Yale University and Harvard Medical School, Cohen completed his postgraduate training in internal medicine on the Harvard service at the Boston City Hospital.
The Hansen Award, and an accompanying $10,000 honorarium, is given annually by the CPH to honor individuals who have made sustained contributions in the health field. The award recognizes exemplary leadership, high ethical standards and an enduring commitment to improving health care on a national and international level. The award is made possible by a gift from Richard and Barbara Hansen of Iowa City.
