Morehouse School of Medicine Health Prevention Advocate Receives Award from Georgia School of Addiction Studies

September 30, 2009 - Morehouse School of Medicine's (MSM) Mary Langley, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.N., CPP, has been honored with the Prevention Pioneer in Georgia Award for her "continual dedication and contributions to prevention in Georgia."
The Georgia School of Addiction Studies made the presentation during its third annual conference, "The Keys to Change" Prevention, Treatment and Recovery," that took place at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront in Savannah, Ga.
A certified parenting educator and co-author of a curriculum for single African-American parents for the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy (G-CAPP), Langley has successfully written several grants to implement community-based prevention and substance abuse treatment programs, as well as school-based abstinence education and remediation programs for rural school systems.
For more than 20 years, she also has worked with the faith community helping various churches develop prevention programs for youth and families and organization development.
"In life there are no excuses, only choices," said Langley. "We must help young people to understand that they must live with the consequences of the choices they make."
Langley is the director of the Health Promotion Resource Center (HPRC) and an associate professor in MSM's Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine. She's committed to MSM's mission and has worked extensively in community development in both urban and rural areas. Langley is credentialed in prevention and experienced in the development, implementation and evaluation of prevention programs for youth and families.
"Dr. Langley continues her remarkable record of achievements, which have created an outstanding reputation for her, and for Morehouse School of Medicine, all over the state of Georgia," said Daniel Blumenthal, M.D., M.P.H., professor and chair emeritus, MSM Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine and associate dean of Community Health.
The HPRC serves as a Prevention Technical Support Center (PTSC) for the Southwest Georgia Region Four (41 counties) Regional Office, one of five regional offices in the state of Georgia's Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD), Office of Prevention Services and Programs. The PTSC primarily supports knowledge development, technical assistance and evaluation of prevention programs funded by DBHDD Regional Offices. The PTSC conducts on-site visits to prevention programs to observe program implementation and assist with data collection activities. The PTSC assists prevention providers to determine relevant outcomes that reduce risk and increase protective factors for substance abuse, violence and other at risk behaviors among target populations.
Initially funded by the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) in Menlo Park, Calif., the HPRC also has developed a health promotion and disease prevention model for underserved populations. The primary focus of the diverse projects administered by the HPRC is health promotion and prevention in African American populations through community-based organizations in both urban and rural communities. Since its inception in 1988, HPRC has provided community organizational development, health promotion and prevention services in over 90 of Georgia's 159 counties.
