Atlanta University Center Schools Kick Off 2009 United Way Campaign

ATLANTA, Nov. 6, 2009 -The Atlanta University Center institutions-Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College joined hands to Live United, in its first combined United Way Campaign and AUC United Way Block Party!

ATLANTA, Nov. 6, 2009 -The Atlanta University Center institutions-Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College joined hands to Live United, in its first combined United Way Campaign and AUC United Way Block Party!

The November 3 AUC Live United events raised just over $20,000 for United Way programs with a total of 373 individual pledges and contributions - bringing the AUC closer to its goal of $55,000 and a stretch goal of $100,000.

The day began with "Morning Glory," where teams of volunteers distributed breakfast snacks and collected donations from AUC employees coming to work. The "AUC United Way Block Party" took place on Welborn Street SW, on the AUC campus from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Former Atlanta Braves legend, Falcons great and MSM Trustee Brian Jordan served as the master of ceremonies for the AUC "Presidents' Jeopardy" featuring Dr. John E. Maupin Jr., from MSM, Dr. Carlton E. Brown from Clark Atlanta University, Dr. Robert Franklin from Morehouse College, and Dr. Beverly Tatum from Spelman College.

Dr. David Satcher, director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute of MSM and longtime supporter of United Way, gave a testimony about the significance of the organization to the community. Currently he serves on the board of the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta and is a member of the United Way's prestigious national leadership society, The Tocqueville Society.

Milton Little, president and CEO of United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, also addressed the audience about the importance of this year's campaign. Several people also received prizes from drawings held during the block party.
