Money Will Help Plan "Atlanta Promise Neighborhood"

ATLANTA -- The Morehouse School of Medicine and the United Way of Metro Atlanta received a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education Wednesday.

The federal grant will be used to start the Atlanta Promise Neighborhood. That's an initiative to change the lives and futures of children and the community west of downtown.

The Morehouse School of Medicine/United Way partnership is one of 21 organizations nationwide that received a Promise Neighborhoods planning grant.

With the one-year grant, Atlanta Promise Neighborhood partners will create a plan to provide cradle-to-college-to-career services in a 1.7 mile wellness zone west of downtown Atlanta.

The Atlanta Promise Neighborhood will focus on Bethune Elementary School students in grades 3-5.
