Dr. Robert Mayberry Receives APHA Epidemiology Section Award


Dr. Robert MayberryRobert M. Mayberry, Ph.D., M.S., M.P.H., professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine received the Abraham Lilienfeld Award given by the Epidemiology Section during its award ceremony at the 139th Annual Meeting and Exposition of the American Public Health Association (APHA) in Washington, DC, on October 31, 2011. The award recognizes excellence in the teaching of epidemiology during the course of a career. Preference for this award is given to the person, who teaches in the classroom, is an engaging lecturer, and whose students have made worthwhile contributions to the improvement of public health. Michelle Davis, Ph.D., M.P.H, regional health administrator (Region II), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and a former student of Dr. Mayberry, introduced Dr. Mayberry at the award ceremony.

In addition to his role as a professor, Dr. Mayberry is the associate director of the Clinical Research Center of Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) and associate director of the Atlanta Clinical and Translational Sciences (ACTSI) Community Engagement and Research Program. Receiving his doctoral training in Epidemiology from the University of California at Berkeley, Dr. Mayberry has served in several leadership positions in academia, government, and the private sector including the assistant dean of the Graduate School at the University of South Carolina, senior epidemiologist for minority health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and director of Health Equity Research at the Baylor Health Care System. While contributing his experiences in research, teaching, program planning and evaluation, and policy analysis, he has led many efforts at research infrastructure development in support of healthcare effectiveness, outcomes, health services, prevention, and disparities research and the integration of scientific findings into clinical decisions and healthcare policy to achieve equitable best care practices.

Dr. Mayberry is active in local, state, and national health services and public health organizations including the Academy Health (former nationally elected member of the Board of Directors and member of Annual Research Meeting Planning Committee), Coalition for Health Services Research, and the American Public Health Association (Epidemiology and Medical Care Sections Planning Committees). As a noted scientist, scholar, and an opinion leader in minority health and health disparities research, he has influenced policy and funding decisions for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Agency for Health Care Research and Policy, and the National Quality Forum in this regard. Dr. Mayberry also serves as an expert consultant and scientific reviewer for several academic, private and federal organizations and reviewer for many peer-review scientific journals.
