James McCune Smith (1813-1865)
The first African-American to earn a medical degree (University of Glasgow, Scotland)
and practice medicine. In 1837, he returned to New York, N.Y., and later became the
first African-American to own and manage a pharmacy. In 1846, he was the only physician

by administering the smallpox vaccine and caring for other diseases such as measles
and tuberculosis.
