Dual Degree Programs

MSM offers a number of dual degree programs to help tailor advanced education to the individual's needs and interest. The following describes each of the dual degree programs we offer:

M.D./Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences

This program requires completion of the full medical curriculum, a modified didactic component for the Ph.D. curriculum, as well as extensive faculty-guided dissertation research in basic and/or clinical sciences. Qualified medical students may enter this program after completing their first two years of preclinical training. After completing additional Ph.D. coursework, students embark on their dissertation research and then return to medical school for their clinical training once that research has been completed.

We have a true Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) in collaboration with the University of Washington. Students accepted into this program will earn an M.D. degree from MSM and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington with full scholarship for both programs. Applicants interested in this program must have applied to our M.D. program through AMCAS and should also contact either Dr. Douglas Paulsen or Dr. Martha Elks, the MSTP program directors.

M.D./M.P.H. Dual Degree Program

This is a 5-year program and one must first be accepted into the M.D. program. Students may elect to begin with the M.P.H. program, complete the first year there and return to their M.D. studies and complete the last year of the M.P.H. program during their senior year in the M.D. program. Alternatively, students may complete the preclinical years and move on to the M.P.H. program to complete the first year. Students complete the final year of the M.P.H. program during their senior year in the M.D. program. For additional information and to apply to the M.D./M.P.H. program, please contact the Admissions Office at mdadmissions@msm.edu or call (404) 752-1650.
