Morehouse School of Medicine takes pride in its graduates from the Preventive Medicine Residency Program and the Master of Public Health Program. As of June 2011, 58 physicians have graduates from the Preventive Medicine Residency Program and 154 students have earned a Master of Public Health degree.
Our graduates can be found everywhere in academia, government agencies, hospitals, and private practice. The largest percentage, 28 percent, work at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Georgia Department of Public Health, or one of the metro Atlanta county health departments.
Twelve percent are serving the health of the public by serving as medical school faculty members training medical students to become physicians. Many are practicing preventive medicine in hospital settings (22 percent) and private practice (14 percent).
Master of Public Health graduates are practicing public health. They work for government agencies, academic research institutions, schools, and in health care settings. Ten graduates have earned doctoral degrees, medical degrees, or law degrees, and five are currently enrolled in doctoral programs.
Each year Morehouse School of Medicine graduates approximately 20 Master of Public Health students and three Preventive Medicine residents. With more private funds available to support scholarships and research projects, MSM will be one of the leading institutions in the nation’s future leadership in preventive medicine and public health.
Annual tuition, room and board, and fees total $38,100 for each student and resident earning a Master of Public Health degree. Few students can afford to pay these costs. They rely heavily on scholarships and other funds to help them achieve their academic and personal goals. As our nation continues to withstand economic recession and face federal budget crises, Morehouse School of Medicine must rely more and more on the generosity and donations of individuals.
I. Daniel S. Blumenthal, M.D., MPH, Public Health Fund
Contributions will be used to support activities for the Daniel S. Blumenthal, M.D.,
MPH, Public Health Fund, including the annual Public Health Summit. The Fund will
support travel expenses and an honorarium for an external speaker and community panel
for the Daniel S. Blumenthal, M.D., MPH, Public Health Summit and to cover operational
costs associated with the Summit.
After the Fund reaches a base, Morehouse School of Medicine will use additional funds to support research projects carried out by students in the Master of Public Health program. Download Public Health Summit Summary to learn about past topics [pdf].
II. Janet M. Blumenthal, Ph.D., Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund was established in memory of Dr. Daniel Blumenthal’s late wife, whose passion
was ensuring that deserving students could afford to get a good education. Unless
otherwise directed by the donor, donations will be divided between the fund’s endowment
and current direct scholarships for MPH students. It assists recipients in reducing
the cost of tuition and fees, and helps prepare them for a future serving the public
health needs of the State of Georgia and beyond.
III. Patricia Rodney, Ph.D., MPH, Scholarship Fund
The fund was established by MPH alumni in recognition of Dr. Patricia Rodney’s service
as Professor, Assistant Dean for Public Health Education, and Director of the Master
of Public Health Program. The scholarship will be awarded to MPH students selected
by the MPH Director and the Scholarship committee. It assists MPH students in reducing
the cost of tuition and fees, and helps prepare them for a future service the public
health needs of the State of Georgia and beyond.
IV. MPH Honor Scholarship in Public Health
To assist Master of Public Health program students in financing their education, Morehouse
School of Medicine provides the Honors Scholarship initiatives to a select number
of first-year entering graduate students who have achieved academic excellence and
demonstrated leadership and community stewardship during their undergraduate course
of study.
Two options for donors to MPH Direct scholarships are available, as follows:
- Option A includes a two-year annual gift based on the MPH degree program. Included are contributions of $38,100 in Year One and $36,300 in Year Two for a full-ride scholarship of full tuition, fees, room/board, books/supplies, and transportation stipend.
- Option B includes a two-year annual gift contribution based on the MPH degree program of $16,000 for Year One and $14,000 for Year Two for annual tuition and fees only.
