Division of Research
The Department of Pediatrics Division of Research was created in 2004 with an overall goal to promote and facilitate research by Pediatrics Department members, residents, and students that focuses on diseases or other conditions that disproportionately affect under-served and minority children. Current members include, Dr. Beatrice Gee (Director), Drs. Iris Buchanan, Frances Dunston, Lilly Immergluck, and Yvonne Fry-Johnson.
In 2007, the Department was awarded a sub-contract of the Atlanta Clinical Translational Science Institute (A-CTSI) with the goal of improving the Department’s research infrastructure and productivity, and to begin the development of the MSM Child Health Institute. The Division of Research members have been collaborating with MSM campus-wide and Emory Pediatrics A-CTSI leadership to define approaches to improving the Pediatric clinical research process, especially at CHOA Hughes Spalding and other MSM affiliates.
Additionally, in December 2007, the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Board of Trustees approved its initial research strategic plan and vision and designated a third of its endowment funds to begin implementation of the plan to position Children’s as a top-tier pediatric research enterprise, working in partnership with Emory University, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Georgia Institute of Technology, Morehouse School of Medicine and others. Dr. Frances Dunston has been a member of the CHOA Research Advisory Council that was formed from this initiative. This group has met twice a month. Dr. Gee serves as departmental representative in Dr. Dunston’s absence.
