The Faculty Development Program is committed to active learning in a nurturing environment while building confidence and competence in academic medicine. Over 200 healthcare professionals completed the program and received over 100 hours of CME credits.
Program Overview
The Faculty Development Program at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) began in 1993 in the Department of Family Medicine. The goal of the program is to increase the nation's supply of minority teachers in Primary Care. As of 1991, there were only 50 minority, full-time academic family medicine physicians in the entire United States. That was less than 3% of faculty in medical schools. Of those faculty members, no more than five were department chairs. Funded by HRSA/s Bureau of Health Professions, the Program has trained over 200 full-time faculty and community-based preceptors in teaching methods, educational theory, computer skills, audiovisual media, grant writing, primary care research, and writing for the medical literature.
We have a credible track record. Published data plus a growing word of mouth reputation has attracted significant interest in our program. For example, we have not had to recruit for participants in our fellowship and in our yearlong certificate program since we graduated our first class in 1993. Candidates approach us and our class is typically full by the April before we begin the next academic year.
