Dean’s Message
Welcome to the Morehouse School of Medicine family! Whether you are joining us as a candidate for the MD, PhD, MSBS, MSCR, or MPH degree, or, you are here as a special scholar, we look forward to your full participation in our commitment to improving the health of underserved people in both urban and rural communities. For those of you who are new to MSM, we are so very pleased that you have chosen to join the Institution at this pivotal moment in its historical journey. It is a time when the health care needs of America have never been greater, the opportunities in research never more exciting, and the mission of MSM never more critical to the health of this country.
Whether teaching, doing research, or providing services to the community, our faculty are united in their effort to train outstanding clinicians, scientists, and community health workers. We are one of the leading medical schools in the country in the percentage of our MD graduates going into primary care residencies. Additionally, more than 61 percent of our alumni who have graduated from our MD program practice in inner city and rural communities. Our scientific and public health professional alumni are working in laboratories, public agencies, and the private sector, in roles that are making a difference in the lives of thousands of individuals and communities, both locally and globally. We are fulfilling our mission.
For those who have chosen to study with us in our undergraduate medical education program, we believe that a full education in medicine should include the opportunity to have an appreciation for biomedical research. Biomedical research has and will continue to revolutionize medicine and the delivery of medical care in the 21st century. Our MSCR students will have an opportunity to learn directly from clinical researchers who are leading hypothesis-driven protocols and thus exploring ways to more immediately improve the health of communities. We encourage students to do research electives in either basic or clinical research.
For students enrolling in the PhD, MD—PhD or the new MSBS program, you will have the opportunity to do research with exceptional basic scientists in either of our institutes, such as the Neuroscience Institute or the Cardiovascular Research Institute, research programs such as Cancer Biology, Reproductive Science, or HIV/AIDS, in addition to our traditional academic departments. Our Institution has been fortunate in attracting a number of well-known scientists who can provide a valuable learning experience whether you are doing a research elective, or wish to train as a biomedical research scientist.
Our goal is to reduce the disparities in health that exist in our communities by producing the best-trained health professionals and scientists who will be the “change agents” in their respective fields. We are proud of all of our programs. I am sure that you will have a meaningful experience. On behalf of our faculty and staff, we are pleased that you have chosen to spend the next few years with us at this stage of your professional development. You are joining a special institution where improving the health of the underserved is central to our teaching, research, and community service programs.
Sincerely,
Valerie Montgomery Rice, M.D.
