Career Counseling
Career education begins in the first year with presentations of different career opportunities
in medicine and the impact of changing trends on the practice of medicine. Students
will have the opportunity for personal identification of professional goals. Career
counseling continues throughout your medical education finalizing with residency selection
and the transition to graduate medical education.
MSM Library
The MSM Library (MSML), located on the first floor of the Medical Education Building
(MEB), contains the most current information available in the health sciences. In
addition to open stacks of books and journals, the MSML houses an audio-visual collection
of videotapes, slides, recorded lectures and computer instructional disks. MSML uses
a web-based, automated integrated library system, Voyager by Endeavor. A number of
work stations are located throughout the reading room. Inquiries regarding use of
the On-Line Public Access Catalog (OPAC) in general, may be addressed to the Information
Services Librarian or other MSML staff members.
All faculty, staff and students of the Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) with an updated and bar coded MSM I.D. may borrow and use the Library's collection. Books located in the general collection circulate for two weeks. Bound journals circulate for three days. The daily fine for overdue materials is $0.50 per day.
Certain books may be placed on strict reserve and therefore must stay in the library. Books on overnight reserve may be checked out one hour before closing and must be returned one hour after opening. A fine of $0.50 per item is levied for every hour overdue for reserves.
Charges for unpaid fines or missing books will be added to the student's account in the Business Office and if not paid, will result in the inability to register or graduate. A $5.00 processing charge must be paid, in addition to fines, once a bill has been sent to the Business Office.
MSML also provides an Extended Study Area located on the second floor of the MEB, Room 1209. This room is open for use twenty-four hours daily.

Friday - 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Saturday - 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Sunday - 12 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Research Information Technology Center Electronic Laboratory (E-lab)
This E-lab is located on the first floor of the Medical Education Building within
the Library. It is specifically intended to strengthen the institution's research
capabilities and provide faculty and students with improved access to, and proficiency
in the use of information technology in research. This Center provides support for
both research and research training. The facility will be used by faculty and students
learning to use information technology and INTERNET resources in biomedical research.
Educational Computer Laboratory (located on the 2nd floor MEB 1209)
Included in the library space is a student computer laboratory in which students have
easy access to Mac and IBM computers. Two of the working stations have dual screen
video disk players and one has an info window touch screen with video disk player.
All are networked with access to a laser printer. Whether it is working on a microbiology
project, or viewing and listening to the heart beat, software and courseware are available
to enhance your educational experience. This room is open for use twenty-four hours
daily.
Mail Service
The school maintains mailboxes where students can receive mail from campus and via
the U.S. Post Office. As a student, you are responsible for checking your box DAILY
for important announcements and other information. The address to be used for mail

Public Safety Services
The Morehouse School of Medicine Public Safety Department has one of the most concerned
and best security forces in the Atlanta University Center. Officers patrol our campus,
answer emergency calls 24 hours a day, and are available upon request to escort you
to your cars when leaving the buildings after dark. For more information call (404)

Student Health Services
Morehouse Medical Associates (MMA) offers comprehensive medical care with the goal
of helping students maintain good health. Our staff is available not only to provide
medical care when you are ill, but also to provide preventive maintenance services
and answer any questions you have regarding your health. We encourage you to take
advantage of the many services available to you.
Eligibility
Regular enrolled MSM students with ID cards validated for the current semester are
eligible for health care at Morehouse Medical Associates.

After Hour Care: For medical care after 5:00 p.m., weekdays, and weekends please call 756-1200 to
speak with the Morehouse Family Practice Resident on call.
Immunizations: Immunizations required as an MSM medical student will be provided on campus. You
will be notified of dates and times through the Student Affairs office. You are charged
with the responsibility of obtaining your immunization on the date and time specified
when you are notified.
Immunization Services
The Morehouse School of Medicine gives the highest priority to the health and well-being
of its students, including matters related to preventing infections in the workplace.
The Office of Student Affairs, in collaboration with the Infection Control office
at MSM, has set up an Immunization Service as part of a comprehensive Student Health
Service for all students.
The Infection Control office is located at the National Center for Primary Care, 1st Floor on the main campus. In addition, when follow-up medical services are needed, students are seen at MMA, the faculty practice plan of MSM. Immunizations are offered free of cost to all students through specially arranged sessions, the dates of which will be announced well in advance via the Students Affairs office. Since all participating institutions, laboratories, hospitals and clinics require documentation of immunizations and/or immunity, MSM will make every effort to help the students in this regard. However, it is incumbent on every student to get the required paper work expedited in a timely manner. Attendance at the immunization sessions is therefore mandatory.
Following is the list of required immunizations to be completed before or during the early stages of the student's career at MSM. For further information or specific questions, please contact the Office of Student Affairs.

a. Tetanus-Diptheria (TD)
b. Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) 30 days apart
(Two injections if born in or after 1957) If born before Jan. 1, 1957, proof of rubella only is required.
c. Polio booster - Hepatitis-B Virus (HBV) immunization series:
a. A three-shot series at 0, 1, and 6 months (or)
b. Documentation of immunity via blood test - If susceptible to chicken pox:
a. Seriological documentation of susceptibility if needed and
b. A two-shot series Varicella vaccine 4-8 weeks apart - Tuberculin (PPD) skin testing:
a. For pre-clinical students, initial two-step testing and annual screening is required.
b. For students in clinical settings, screenings are required every 6 months.
c. As per current CDC guidelines, a positive reaction
(>10mm of induration) even with history of BCG in early childhood, does not change the recommendations for work-up and treatment.
