Presidential Statement Regarding Attack on People of Asian Descent

As a community, Morehouse School of Medicine is stunned by last evening’s attacks that left six Asian American women

and two others dead. Over the last year, people of Asian descent in Georgia, like in many areas across the country, have faced escalating verbal abuse, harassment, and violence.

The shock and fear that now permeates many neighbors across metropolitan Atlanta must be met with a resolve to do more to protect lives, press for justice, and advance healing.

In Atlanta, Asians make up about 4% of the city’s population, but Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) are the fastest-growing community in the state. We understand what it means to face vicious stereotypes and we must continue to reject bigotry when and wherever it rears its ugly head.

Today, we not only mourn this tragic loss, it is our obligation to stand in solidarity with our AAPI brothers and sisters.
