Morehouse School of Medicine Student Leader Jamil Joyner Attends HBCU Event at White House

Event brings together dozens of students to discuss HBCU funding, student loan forgiveness, and more.

ATLANTA – FEBRUARY 28, 2023 – Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) Student Government Association President Jamil Joyner attended an event at the White House with Vice President Kamala Harris and Senior Advisor for Public Engagement Keisha Lance Bottoms on Thursday, February 23.

Mr. Joyner, who is pursuing a medical degree at MSM as well as a Master's in Business Administration from the Georgia Institute of Technology, was among more than 40 students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the United States to participate. Both Vice President Harris and Ms. Bottoms are HBCU alumnae, having graduated from Howard University and Florida A&M University, respectively.

The conversation included a range of topics including the Biden-Harris administration's support for HBCU students, the need for increased funding of HBCUs, student loan forgiveness efforts, and more. Vice President Harris and Ms. Bottoms underlined the steps taken by the administration thus far, such as reestablishing the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Historically Black Colleges and Universities and a total investment of nearly $6 billion in HBCUs by the Department of Education. The administration has also restarted and expanded the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Black Americans.
