40 Doctors Complete Residency Program at MSM, Nearly Half to Stay and Practice in Georgia

After years of hard work, 40 doctors have now completed their residency programs through the Graduate Medical Education program at Morehouse School of Medicine. A graduation and celebration were held on Friday, June 1, on MSM’s campus.

Almost half of the graduates, 19, will stay and practice their craft in the state of Georgia in various fields.

Here is a breakdown of the graduates and their chosen fields of practice:

  • Family Medicine – 6
  • Internal Medicine – 19
  • OB/Gyn – 4
  • Pediatrics – 5
  • Psychiatry – 3
  • Public Health and Preventive Medicine – 1
  • Surgery – 2

Simran Brar, M.D. was named 2018 Resident of the Year. She served as the administrative chief resident while completing her residency in general psychiatry. Dr. Brar will now go on to a Child and Adolescent Fellowship at Indiana University.

The 2018 Reginald and Ryan Wimberly Humanism in Medicine Award was presented to Caryn Robertson, M.D.  A native of Stone Mountain, Ga., Dr. Robertson will soon start a three-year fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at Emory University.

The graduating residents also recognized their supporters by handing out three special awards. The 2018 Faculty Member of the Year Award went to Claudia Fotzeu, M.D. She is the medical director of the MSM Internal Medicine Primary Care Clinic as well as co-director of the Pre-Operative Care Service at Grady Memorial Hospital. Tara Joyner received the 2018 Friend of GME Award. Joyner has been with MSM for more than 15 years and currently works in Administrative Services. The 2018 Program Manager of the Year Award went to Montreka Dansby. She is a program manager for Surgical Education in the MSM Department of Surgery.
