The area of robotic surgery is growing.
Dr. Sylvester McRae of St. Francis OBGYN in Columbus has become the first in this
area to perform a full hysterectomy by using the Single Site Robotic method.
The FDA had already approved the use of the procedure for gall bladder surgeries,
now the area has opened up for gynecologists to expand their field.
Using the Da Vinci Robotics, doctors can perform a full hysterectomy by going through
the belly button. Under the previous robotics method, 3 to four incisions would be
made.
Patients can be back at work in a week compared to the 6 to 8 weeks with conventional
surgery.
Some Single Site patients develop a small umbilical hernia which Dr. McRae says can
be corrected.
