Empowering the Next Generation: A Look Back at the 2025 Emerging Student Leadership Academy
At Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), cultivating leadership is more than a mission — it’s a responsibility. The 2025 Emerging Student Leadership Academy (ESLA) embraced this charge by delivering a two-day, high-impact experience designed to build, elevate, transform and connect learners through intentional, career-focused development.
Fifteen selected participants immersed themselves in interactive workshops, guided reflections and mentorship conversations led by MSM alumni and industry professionals. Grounded in the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) competencies, the academy explored the critical elements of professional growth — career and self-development, communication, critical thinking, leadership, professionalism, teamwork and technology. These foundational areas were positioned not as checkboxes, but as essential tools that shape how emerging professionals show up in the world.
Throughout the sessions, students were empowered to define their professional identity, refine their personal brands and navigate key concepts that would help them thrive in the scientific and healthcare workforce. From tackling ethical decision-making to embracing the future of AI and emerging technology, ESLA encouraged learners to see themselves as future-forward leaders — capable, thoughtful and deeply aware of the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Looking to the future, program leaders plan to expand ESLA’s impact by broadening the speaker lineup, increasing interdisciplinary engagement and deepening mentorship opportunities. The goal is not only to equip students with technical skills but also to nurture their ability to lead with integrity, innovation and purpose in a rapidly evolving professional landscape.
The 2025 ESLA reaffirmed that leadership isn’t just about where you’re going — it’s about how you’re preparing to get there. At MSM, we’re proud to continue investing in students who are not only ready to step into their careers, but ready to shape the future.
