Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice Appointed to Georgia Power Board of Directors
MSM President & CEO continues legacy of leadership and service across Georgia
Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) proudly celebrates the appointment of its President
and CEO, Valerie Montgomery Rice, MD, FACOG, to the board of directors of Georgia Power. This prestigious appointment reflects Dr. Montgomery Rice’s far-reaching leadership,
her dedication to service and her unwavering commitment to advancing opportunity across
Georgia and beyond.
A renowned infertility specialist, educator and researcher, Dr. Montgomery Rice became the first woman to lead Morehouse School of Medicine in 2014 and has continued to shape its mission since joining the institution in 2011. Under her transformative leadership, MSM has expanded its reach through regional medical campuses in Albany and Columbus — training students where they are most needed and catalyzing health access, local workforce development and economic vitality in resource-limited areas. These priorities closely align with Georgia Power’s own commitment to building stronger communities across the state.
“Valerie is an incredible leader who has helped Morehouse School of Medicine grow and excel across the board,” said Kim Greene, chairman, president and CEO of Georgia Power. “She brings incredible leadership capability that will help us better serve customers and drive superior performance to meet the energy needs of a growing Georgia.”
Before joining MSM, Dr. Montgomery Rice held leadership roles at several major academic health centers, including founding the Center for Women’s Health Research at Meharry Medical College — one of the first research centers in the nation focused on diseases affecting women of color. Her impact has long extended beyond medicine, with service on numerous national and statewide boards including UnitedHealth Group, the Georgia Research Alliance, and the Atlanta Metro Chamber. A Georgia native, she is an alumna of Georgia Tech and Harvard Medical School and has received multiple honors for her work in advancing education, healthcare access optimization and collaborative growth.
Georgia Power’s longstanding partnership with HBCUs, including MSM, further highlights the significance of this appointment. In 2019, the company was honored with MSM’s Louis C. Brown MD Vanguard Award, and most recently, in 2023, the Georgia Power Foundation supported full scholarships for 12 MSM students. With over $10.6 million invested in education initiatives in 2024 alone, Georgia Power continues to demonstrate its commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders.
Dr. Montgomery Rice’s appointment signals not just a seat at the table —but a vision for a more connected, engaged and healthier Georgia.
