Morehouse School of Medicine Prevention Research Center Receives Best Practice Award in Community-Based Participatory Research


The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Prevention Research Center’s National Community Committee presented the Morehouse School of Medicine Prevention Research Center (MSM PRC) with a Best Practice Award in Community-Based Participatory Research at the 2011 CDC PRC Annual Program Meeting on April 12, 2011. MSM PRC was one of eleven award recipients from among the thirty-seven PRCs across the country. Awardees were selected from a competitive application and review process. Key criteria for the award included: outstanding community engagement in the core and other PRC research projects, strong community coalition board (CCB) governance structure and overall commitment to improving the health of our communities. Dr. Daniel Blumenthal (Principal Investigator), Dr. Tabia Henry Akintobi (Center Director), LaShawn Hoffman (CCB Chair), Lisa Goodin, MBA (Associate Director), David Collins (Assistant Director, Community Engagement), and Dr. Elleen Yancey (Co-Principal Investigator, Core HIV Research) received the award on behalf of the PRC.

3 A+ AWARDS!

The Atlanta Public Schools and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce have presented Morehouse School of Medicine with an “A+” Award no less than three times: 2004, 2010, and 2011. The first award recognized the partnership between MSM and the Martin Luther King, Jr., Middle School; the other two, the partnership between MSM and the Thomasville Heights Elementary School.

The A+ Awards are coordinated by the Atlanta Partners for Education (APFE), a joint program of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and the Atlanta Public Schools . The A + Awards celebrate achievement and excellence in educational partnerships between individual schools and Metro Atlanta business and organizations. The A+ Awards Luncheon is annually attended by more than 1,000 community leaders, educators, students and concerned citizens – including the Mayor of Atlanta, Superintendent of the Atlanta Public Schools, the Chair of the Atlanta Board of Education and numerous senior-level business executive.

The 2004 award recognized the efforts of a group of nine first-year medical students in the MSM Community Health Course under the supervision of Dr. Beverly Taylor and Ms. Carla Durham. In addition to providing tutoring, the medical students developed a drug abuse prevention program. The 2010 and 2011 awards acknowledged the efforts of 14 first-year medical students who were supervised by Drs. Daniel Blumenthal and Elvan Daniels and Ms. Gail McCray. The medical students provided tutoring and developed an obesity prevention program for the schoolchildren.

Morehouse School of Medicine Prevention Research Center Partnership receives 2010 Joseph D. Greene Award from Healthcare Georgia Foundation

The Joseph D. Greene Community Service Award honors extraordinary individuals and nonprofit organizations that are committed to improving the quality of health and health care of those they serve. The MSM PRC received the award at the March 31, 2010 Awards Ceremony at the Westin Buckhead Atlanta Hotel.

MSM Prevention Research Center receives award for Excellence in Community-Based Prevention Research at PRC Program 20th Anniversary Celebration

The PRC Program 20th Anniversary Celebration took place during the 2006 American Public Health Association meeting in San Francisco. The MSM PRC was selected for this singular award from among all 33 Prevention Research Centers.

Recognition For Highest Percent Increase In Total Citations In The Field Of Social Sciences [website]

According to a recent analysis for in-cites, Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, achieved the highest percent increase in total citations in the field of Social Sciences. The institution’s current record in this field includes 35 papers cited a total of 420 times to date in the ISI Essential Science Indicators Web product. Morehouse’s record also includes 382 papers cited a total of 4,636 times to date in the field of Clinical Medicine. In the interview below, Dr. Daniel Blumenthal, the Chair of Morehouse’s Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine, talks about the institution’s highly cited work in Social Sciences.


2004

Georgia HIV/AIDS Community Service Award

In a ceremony conducted at the Carter Presidential Center on July 21, 2004, Morehouse School of Medicine's Imani Project received the Georgia HIV/AIDS Community Service Award. This award is presented to people and organizations in Georgia that have made an outstanding contribution to confronting the challenge of HIV/AIDS in our community. The recognition was accorded in conjunction with the XII Annual NIMH Conference on the Role of Families in Preventing and Adapting to HIV/AIDS. The Imani Project is a project of the MSM Department of Pediatrics. It is directed by Dr. James Griffin, Clinical Assistant Professor of Community Health and Preventive Medicine and Pediatrics.


2002

Morehouse School of Medicine receives 2002 National Award from Community-Campus Partnerships for Health
The Morehouse School of Medicine – Southside Atlanta Partnership was presented the first Community-Campus Partnerships for Health Award at the organization’s 2002 annual meeting in Miami, Florida.

The Community-Campus Partnerships for Health Award recognizes exemplary partnerships between communities and higher educational institutions that build on each other's strengths to improve higher education, civic engagement, and the overall health of communities.

The intent of the award is to highlight the power and potential of community-campus partnerships as a strategy for social justice. The award recognizes partnerships that are striving to achieve the systems and policy changes needed to overcome the root causes of health, social, environmental and economic inequalities.

Morehouse School of Medicine receives 1999 Outstanding Community Service Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges
This award honors member institutions with a longstanding, major institutional commitment to addressing community needs. The award recognizes exceptional programs that go well beyond the traditional role of academic medicine and reach communities whose needs are not being met through the traditional health delivery system. The award was renamed in 2007 to honor Spencer "Spike" Foreman, M.D., who established the award in 1993 while serving as chair of the AAMC.
